Maybrey Precision Castings, as part of the Caro Group, has been awarded the Future Net Zero Platinum Award: the highest level of the FNZ programme and the most rigorous independent certification available for carbon reduction in UK manufacturing. The Platinum award verifies an 81.3% reduction in our total carbon footprint since beginning the net zero journey in 2018.

What the Platinum Award Represents

The Future Net Zero Standard is verified by independent assessors and aligns with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Race to Zero campaign. Platinum status, the highest of three tiers (Silver, Gold, and Platinum), requires comprehensive measurement, reporting, and verified reduction of carbon emissions across all scopes. It is not self-certified: independent assessors verify every claim.

Achieving net zero emissions ahead of the 2050 goal, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% ahead of the 2030 deadline, are among the milestones the Platinum award recognises.

How We Got Here

The carbon reduction programme has involved transformation across every part of our operation:

• Energy: all facilities switched to green energy contracts; low-powered machinery throughout the foundry; enhanced energy monitoring systems installed
• Transport: expanded electric and hybrid vehicle fleet; 85% of deliveries now carbon-neutral through carbon-offsetting courier partnerships; business travel reduced by 135.7% against the baseline; car-sharing covering more than 65% of staff
• Supply chain: all pattern makers, core makers, and finishing contractors located within ten miles of our Aylesford foundry; subcontractor deliveries consolidated into full pallets to reduce unnecessary journeys
• Operations: 50% of board meetings and three international meetings moved fully online

Explore our Carbon Net Zero journey from the beginning

When a casting commission arrives at Maybrey, it usually comes with a drawing, a specification, and a delivery date. The Black Renaissance project arrived with something more: a brief that carried the weight of history.

The Equal Justice Initiative

The Black Renaissance sculptures were commissioned by the Equal Justice Initiative, the Alabama-based civil rights organisation founded by Bryan Stevenson. The EJI is best known in the UK for Stevenson's book and film Just Mercy and for the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama: the first memorial in the United States dedicated to the victims of lynching. The Freedom Monument Sculpture Park, where the Black Renaissance sculptures now stand, is the EJI's next major undertaking on the same site.

What the Project Represents

The park is dedicated to exploring the lived experience of the millions of Black people enslaved in America, honouring their courage and resilience, and celebrating the contributions that history so often failed to record. The Black Renaissance series, conceived by artist Rayvenn Shaleigha D'Clark, does exactly what its name suggests: it asserts the presence, the creativity, and the humanity of people whose stories were systematically suppressed.

The five sculptures depict anonymous figures: not named individuals but composite representations of the unnamed. Each is unique. Each carries the detail and dignity that the historical record too often denied the people it represents.

Why It Matters That These Castings Were Made in Bronze

Bronze is the material of monuments. It is the material that says: this matters, this should last, this should be seen by people who are not yet born. The choice to cast the Black Renaissance sculptures in silicon bronze was not incidental. It was an assertion that these figures belong in the landscape of permanent public art, on equal terms with any other monument.

Producing those castings at the technical standard the work required was, for our team, a privilege. We are a foundry that has been making things for 177 years. The Black Renaissance project reminded us that what we make can matter beyond the technical specification.

Maybrey Wins CMF Component of the Year

Maybrey Precision Castings has been awarded the Component of the Year at the Cast Metals Federation Awards 2024, in recognition of our work on the Black Renaissance sculptures: five monumental silicon bronze figures now installed at the Freedom Monument Sculpture Park in Montgomery, Alabama.

The award recognises outstanding technical achievement in the production of castings, judged on innovation, quality, and the challenges overcome in delivering the component. The sculptures featured deep facial dimpling and pronounced undercutting that conventional sand patterns would have been unable to handle. Our team pioneered the use of Voxeljet AG printed sand mould technology to preserve the intricate surface detail through the casting process.

Aerospace casting is not a different process from other casting. It is the same fundamentals: pattern, mould, pour, solidify, inspect. What makes it different is the framework within which every step is controlled, documented, and verified, and the consequence of getting any of it wrong.

Maybrey Precision Castings has held unbroken aerospace approval since 1937, when the Air Registration Board first approved our foundry for aviation work. That certification is now AS9100 Rev D. No other UK foundry has held a longer continuous record of aerospace approval.

What Aerospace Casting Requires

Aerospace castings must meet tight dimensional tolerances, specified mechanical properties, and full chemical traceability. At Maybrey, our aerospace work is produced on a dedicated line using only new PepSet silica sand. Aluminium only is melted on this line: cross-contamination with other alloys is not permitted.

Aerospace Alloys

We cast in the full range of aerospace specification aluminium alloys, including BS2L99, BSL169, A356, A357, and BSL119 (RR350). Every incoming ingot is tested on our calibrated Spectro MAX X spectrometer before use. No ingot enters production that has not been analysed and confirmed.

Traceability: From Ingot to Despatch

A router card follows every aerospace casting through the facility from moulding to despatch. Each processing step, the operator, date, and any non-conformances are recorded. Certification is issued from our in-house quality database system once all required processing and testing is complete.

Chemical and Mechanical Testing

Releasing a casting under AS9100 requires both chemical analysis and mechanical testing. Chemical analysis is carried out using Spectro MAX X spectrometers: at incoming inspection, as a daily foundry check, and as a final analysis for the certificate of conformity. Mechanical testing is carried out using our 0.5% resolution 100 kN WDW-100-E Tensile Tester, compliant to BS EN ISO 7500-1:2018.

NADCAP Sub-Contracted Processes

• Non-destructive testing (NDT)
• Hot isostatic pressing (HIPping): eliminates internal porosity in safety-critical castings
• X-ray inspection
• Dye penetrant testing

An Illustrative Application

One application that illustrates the capability of the process is the Ram Air Turbine (RAT) system: the emergency power generation unit deployed in the event of engine failure on certain aircraft. Safety-critical by definition. This is the standard to which our aerospace casting is held, across every component we produce for this sector.
